Artist Statement
Approach
Artists are always asked, “Why do you make art?” The common response inevitably ends up being, “I make art because …”It’s the word “because” that ends up defining each individual artist.
Because I can, because I love expressing the beauty in my soul or the angst or the wonder or simply the obsessive compulsion of my nature. Because I’m enthralled with color, light, form, volume or the rhythm of design. And don’t forget, there’s the added impulse of communing with the muse, that elusive spirit that conspires to give the artistic acolyte just enough of the ethereal magic to bring us back for more, the bastards.
Is it because I like to suffer, to fail, to procrastinate then rally enough to re-engage, to become transported and then, yes, occasionally succeed? You bet it is.
It’s an opportunity to step back from commonality and momentarily stand shoulder to shoulder with the divine as a co-creator in the creative artistic process.
